Washer Repair / Symptom Guide

Washer Not Spinning — Why & What to Check First

A washer that fills and drains but doesn't spin leaves clothes dripping wet. The cause is almost always one of four things: load balance, lid switch, drive belt, or motor. Diagnosis takes 5 minutes.

    Common Causes

    1. Unbalanced load (most common)

Modern washers refuse to spin if the load is bunched on one side. Heavy items like rugs, jeans, or a single towel can trigger this. Washer either skips spin or spins at very low RPM.

    2. Broken drive belt

On belt-driven washers, the rubber belt connecting the motor to the drum can stretch, crack, or snap. Symptoms: motor runs but drum doesn't turn during spin.

    3. Lid switch / door lock failure

For safety, the washer won't spin if the lid (top-loader) or door (front-loader) isn't fully locked. A failed switch tells the washer the door is open.

    4. Motor coupler (direct-drive)

Whirlpool / Kenmore direct-drive top-loaders use a plastic coupler between the motor and transmission. It can shear off — agitator still works, but no spin. ~$20 part, awkward labor.

    5. Worn clutch or bearings

Top-loader clutches wear out and slip. You'll hear loud grinding or screeching during spin. Bearings on front-loaders can fail and cause horrible noise; expensive repair.

    What You Can Check Yourself

Try these in order — most take 5-10 minutes and many resolve the problem without a service call.

    1. 1

      Re-balance the load

Open the washer. Redistribute clothes evenly around the drum. Add a few extra items if it's just a single heavy thing. Close and restart spin. If it now spins — problem was balance, not the washer.

    2. 2

      Try a small load test

Empty the washer. Put 4-5 small items in. Run rinse-and-spin cycle. If it spins fine with small load but not large — you have a balance / suspension issue, not a mechanical failure.

    3. 3

      Check lid / door latch

Top-loader: open lid, press the small button or paddle the lid normally hits — should feel a click. Front-loader: try to open the door mid-cycle. If it opens, the door lock is broken (door should be locked solid).

    4. 4

      Listen during spin

Start spin cycle. Motor humming but drum still = belt or coupler. Motor silent = lid switch or control. Loud grinding = bearings or clutch.

    When to Call a Pro

    • Washer spins fine empty but not under any load
    • You hear grinding, screeching, or burning smell during spin
    • Drum visibly wobbles or hits the cabinet (suspension/shock absorbers failed — front-loaders)
    • Spin works but stops mid-cycle with error code on display

    Typical cost

$60 diagnostic. Belt / coupler $150–$220. Motor / clutch $250–$450. Front-loader bearing job often quoted vs replacement.
